Allied Health Professions (AHPs) provide therapies and support to children, young people and their families. They are groups of different services that help children, young people and their families both in the hospital and in the community (including at home, in nursery or at school) across Edinburgh and the Lothian region.

AHPs and different types of therapies include:

  • Arts Therapy (music, art, drama and dance)
  • Dietetics
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Orthoptics
  • Prosthetics and orthotics
  • Physiotherapy
  • Podiatry
  • Speech and language
  • Radiography – diagnostic & therapeutic

Therapists (AHPs) work with children and young people recovering from illness or injury, with ongoing conditions, or who are finding certain things challenging in their everyday lives. AHPs work together with families, doctors, nurses, teachers and education teams, GPs and other professionals to support children and young people’s development, independence and wellbeing.

AHPs and therapists often wear the same turquoise uniform and work closely together. Each has a different role supporting children and young people. For more information about the different therapy and support services, how to get in touch, to request further help, or to prepare for an appointment please click on the service you need from the list on this page.

We also have social media channels which regularly post other information and ideas.  Find us on Facebook @NHSLothianAHP and @NHSLothianSLT.  Watch our YouTube channel Children and Young People’s Therapies & Support.

All of the resources within this website have been recommended or created by specialist professionals within NHS Lothian. If you have any comments about the site or other information you are looking for please contact us using the details on each individual page.
