Allied Health Professions (AHPs) provide therapies and support to children, young people and their families. They are groups of different services that help children, young people and their families both in the hospital and in the community (including at home, in nursery or at school) across Edinburgh and the Lothian region.
AHPs and different types of therapies include:
- Arts Therapy (music, art, drama and dance)
- Dietetics
- Occupational Therapy
- Orthoptics
- Prosthetics and orthotics
- Physiotherapy
- Podiatry
- Speech and language
- Radiography – diagnostic & therapeutic
Therapists (AHPs) work with children and young people recovering from illness or injury, with ongoing conditions, or who are finding certain things challenging in their everyday lives. AHPs work together with families, doctors, nurses, teachers and education teams, GPs and other professionals to support children and young people’s development, independence and wellbeing.
AHPs and therapists often wear the same turquoise uniform and work closely together. Each has a different role supporting children and young people.
