Accommodation for families

Ronald McD House

Each in-patient bed at the RHCYP has a pull-down single bed for a parent or carer to stay overnight with their child.

In addition, accommodation is available at Ronald McDonald House for those families facing longer in-patient stays, emergency admissions or surgery.

Your child’s nursing teams can arrange this accommodation for you – and also direct you to our range of family support for space to talk, expert advice, financial help, space to wait or relax and complementary therapies to for the wellbeing of patients and families.

Critical Care Unit

Critical Care does not have individual beds for parents to sleep next to their child, due to the amount of equipment and space needed around each bed space. The unit has two family bedrooms for overnight accommodation where a family needs to stay close by. Families with a child in Critical Care will be prioritised for accommodation at Ronald McDonald House wherever possible.

Ronald McDonald House UK helps families by providing free accommodation at or near 14 specialist children’s hospitals in the UK, so families are just minutes from their child’s hospital wards. Our House in Edinburgh has 26 bedrooms and supports families with children being treated at The Royal Hospital for Children & Young People.

If you wish to use our facilities, please speak to a member of the medical team on your child’s ward. All referrals for our services are made directly through the hospital.

Alongside providing overnight accommodation, we’re also delighted to welcome families to use our communal facilities through our Day Pass Programme, where they can come to the House and make use of our communal kitchen, lounge and laundry.

Child patients can additionally visit the House through our Medical Pass Programme, giving them some much-needed respite away from the ward. Please note that this must be approved by the medical professional responsible for your child’s care.
