The ophthalmology team works together to look after children and young people with a wide variety of conditions affecting their eyes and vision. The team includes orthoptists, optometrists and paediatric ophthalmologists.
We see children at the RHCYP in Edinburgh, the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh or at St. John’s Hospital in Livingston. Please check your appointment letter carefully to make sure you come to the right place!

Orthoptists
Orthoptists are eye care professionals who specialise in visual development, eye movement and coordination of the eyes. Their main role is in diagnosis and non-surgical management of squint (also called strabismus) and visual disorders such as the lazy eye (also called amblyopia) and eye muscle defects. Orthoptists see patients of all ages, the majority being children.
Optometrists
We are optometrists who have chosen to work with children. We check for refractive errors and prescribe glasses accordingly. We can identify and screen for eye diseases and work closely with orthoptists and ophthalmologists. In the community, we check vision in older children, referring children with problems to the hospital eye service if we think they need to be seen.
Ophthalmologists
Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who have specialised in the eye and vision. We have trained to look after children of all ages and often work together with paediatricians in other medical specialities. We diagnose, assess and treat children with vision problems through medication or sometimes with an operation.
Uveitis
Uveitis is a condition affecting the eye that can cause eye pain or vision changes. An eye test can be carried out to check for Uveitis.
